Notes

From 1963 onwards, Gustave Asselbergs worked on 'Het Beeldalfabet' [The image alphabet], an ambitious project in-between art and science. The artist's intention was to omit letters and to communicate directly with images and symbols. Drawings of symbols combined in collages formed complex images and new meanings, and according to the artist's calculations, 387 million different combinations were possible. In 1963 Gustave Asselbergs was probably one of the first artists to use a computer in his work (Source: Jongert, Pieter. Gustave Asselbergs. In: Gustave Asselbergs en de pop art in Nederland. Nijmegen, Commanderie van Sint-Jan, 1994, pp. 40 - 42). Since Het Beeldalfabet collages were composed of nine drawings, the collages offered here are probably studies for the project.
