Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 1,400 Euro

Technique, science and natural phenomena are the themes in Tom Shannon's work. He enjoys working with self-developed magnetic systems, by means of which he brings his objects to float. So in the present object an elongated, polished aluminum element floats over a gently curved, elliptic base, held in place only by a nearly invisible thin steel cord.

Condition:
The magnet object is in very good condition. The base measures ca.40 x 25 x 2.5 cm, the floating element ca. 40 x 5 x 3 cm. The steel cord has a length of 10.5 cm (without mounting end pieces).

Tom Shannon (b. 1947)
Tom Shannon graduated from the University of Wisconsin and received his Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1971. Since his first presentation at the MoMA in 1969, he has been famous for his conceptual works revealing scientific themes and natural forces, such as magnetism. His magnetically levitated sculptures are, for instance, some of his best-known works. His ideas often require him to slip into the role of an inventor and by now Shannon even holds a number of patents. His works have been shown in numerous international exhibitions, including presentations at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Stedeljik Museum in Amsterdam and the Whitney Museum in NY. The award-winning artist lives and works in Manhattan, today. (fea)
