Description

Taber, Isaiah West California Street, S.F. California Street from Sansome Street, S.F., looking West. 1870/1880. Albumen print. Circa 20,5 x 31 cm. Photographer's name, title and number in lower edge in the negative, mounted to board (slightly time-stained in edges). Together with the creditor John G. Cook, Taber took over Carleton E. Watkins' negatives and gallery in the 1870s when Watkins was bankrupt. Later in 1906 Taber himself lost his gallery and negatives, which included 80 tons of portrait negatives and 20 tons of view negatives, in the devastating fire which followed the San Francisco earthquake. - Slightly faded in edges, otherwise in very good condition.
