Notes

From the Fractal works series, or 'family' as the artist calls it: 'A fractal is a concept that was defined by the mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot in 1975... A fractal is a mathematical entity built according to a formula that repeats itself. This creates parts that are similar to the whole. The whole of nature is made up of fractals. People find examples of such a structure-within-a-structure everywhere, such as the branches on the trunk of a tree, the offshoots in the veins of our bloodstream, the hills of a mountain range or the coves of a coastline. In Sjoerd Buisman’s work, fractals are clearly shown in the offshoots of trees and plants, where he literally allows them to form from the spiralling Phyllotaxis. For Sjoerd, the relationship between the trunk and the outermost end of the fractal is important: 'the stem has already been through a lot, bird bites, insect breeding, making branches, while the outermost fractal has just begun its growth and doesn't yet know anything of life'. It is, therefore, not just about the structure of the mathematical formula behind the separation, but also about the relationship between old age, adulthood and youth' (from the annotation of the Natura 2017 exhibition of Sculptuur Bredelar).
