Lot 234: Roman Signer, ‘Black Cloth’, Offset Print, Switzerland, 1994

‘Black Cloth’ was a performance conducted in 1994 by Roman Signer. It was recorded by photographer Stefran Rohner in a serial of six black and white photographs, of which four are visible on offered offset print. Signer is one of the few Swiss artists licensed to work with explosives and for this performance he positioned himself on a chair, surrounded by four buckets and covered with a cloth. Due to explosions in the buckets, the cloth raised up and uncovered the artist.

Condition:
The offset print is in a very good condition. The image dimensions are 29.5 x 95.4 cm, while the sheet size is 61.8 x 100.3 cm.

Roman Signer (b. 1938)
Artist Roman Signer was born in 1938 in Appenzell and studied at the School of Design in Zurich from 1966-71. He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw for one year and returned to Switzerland in 1972. From 1973 onwards, his works were exhibited in many exhibitions at galleries and museums and as of 1981, public performances followed. Since his participation at the documenta 8 in Kassel (1987), the exhibition ‘Skulptur.Projekte’ in Münster (1997) and the Venice Biennale (1999), he is regarded as one of the major European contemporary artists. His work has won numerous awards, he received for example the Art Prize of the City of St. Gallen in 2004, in 2008 the Hugo Boss Prize and most recently in 2010 the Prix Meret Oppenheim.
