Item Overview

Description

RENE LEVERD (1872-1938)
Cycles & Automobiles Clément.
Along with Gladiator, with which it merged financially in 1896, Clément was one of the bicycle makes that accounted for more posters than any other. In a genre full of fanciful imagery and exotically costumed (or uncostumed) figures, here is a straightforwardly charming narrative scene: several cyclists and a lady in her car wait for a train to pass a country crossing. Interesting how cars have changed so much and bikes so little. René Leverd, son and student of landscape painter Léon Leverd, was primarily a watercolorist whose scenes of Paris and environs were much noted and exhibited.
