Biermann, Aenne Portrait of Gertrud Engels Portrait of Gertrud Engels. 1929. Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print. 23,4 x 17,7 cm. Mounted to board, signed and annotated Gera by the photographer in pencil below the image on the mount; Photographer's Deutsche Werkbund stamp and numbered twice in pencil on the verso. Aenne Biermann was a self-taught photographer who worked somewhat outside the European avant-garde, although there is a strong modernist feel to her work. Today several of her images have become icons of the New Vision photography. Biermann's photographs were also included in the Film und Foto exhibition in 1929 in Stuttgart. Much of her work was confiscated by the National Socialists and a large number of her prints and negatives are missing. - A few areas of light surface rubbing, crease in upper right corner, otherwise in very good condition.
