The Weißenbach amidst picturesque mountains near the Attersee – a must-have for collectors of the popular Salzkammergut motifs; comparable artworks by Oswald Grill fetch up to 17,000 Euros at auction
Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 4,000 Euro

The Weißenbachtal, which the Austrian painter Oswald Grill captured in this painting is situated close to the Attersee at the Salzkammergut. The Weißenbach (white brook) streams straight towards the spectator. Both sides of the brook bank are lined with tall fir trees and shrubs and at the background a high, snowcapped mountain range is depicted. Both, the mountains and the trees are washed with warm, soft sunlight. The image has an atmosphere full of life to it. The spring landscape seems almost to be awakened by the sunlight to shine in its entire glory. Oswald Grill was especially gifted in capturing the fine ambiences of nature.

The painting is in good condition. The canvas has been relined. There are small restorations along the outer edges and in the area of the fir trees which can only be detected under UV light. The painting is signed lower right “O. Grill”. The decorative gilt frame shows minor traces of age and wear. The overall dimensions are framed 95 x 105 cm, unframed 80 x 90 cm.

In 1929, Grill was called to the university as professor and he received numerous awards during his life time. His oeuvre comprises mainly landscape paintings, which he often exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the Munich Glaspalast.
