Item Overview

Description

Montmartre.
MAXIME DETHOMAS (1867-1929)
Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris
Cond B/Slight tears at folds.
To advertise a guidebook to the district in Paris' 18th arrondissement, the artist depicts a native specimen-a coquettish damsel in a fur-lined coat strolling down the avenue. The influence of his friend Lautrec is clearly in evidence in this rare design. "A student . . . at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, Dethomas became a painter, pastelist, lithographer, and illustrator but was best known for designing stage sets for the theater and Opera . . . In the 1880s and 1890s he was part of the active Montmartre circle of artists and bohemians . . . Lautrec described his friend as 'a charming lad and a painter who does not talk about his own painting, which is greatly to be admired'" (Lautrec/Montmartre, p. 267).
