Notes

The note written on the reverse of the panel contains a fragment of the fable XXI (book 6) by Jean de La Fontaine - The young widow, which refers to the the painting's theme. The fragment reads as follows:

" Between the widow of a year

And of a day, the difference

Is so immense,

That very few who see her

Would think the laughing dame

And weeping one the same."

The note continues "attached table was painted by me August 27, 1857 The Hague David Bles'" (translation from French).
