If you take Fries' vision as lithographic gospel, then life on the Baltic Sea in northeast Germany is little more than a Technicolor dream come true, a frolicsome panorama filled with sun and fun. And really, who are we to argue? Along with Krotowski and Hohlwein, Fries is one of three distinguished German artists who dominated the first generation of poster design for the PKZ department store (see No. 34) and was active as a designer in Berlin well into the 1930s.
