Notes

["Between approximately 1915 and 1920, Zijl made a relatively large number of bronze statues of people in all kinds of positions and postures. Besides a number of full length portraits of boys and girls, usually the children of himself or of friends and acquaintances, there are many figures of farmers and laborers (...) His interest in this theme is probably related to his work for the office building of the insurance company 'Arhnem', which was completed in 1916 (...) Other sculptures from this group, such as the "Boer" from 1916, the "Wasvrouw" and the "Drinker", both from 1920, were apparently immediately made as 'free' compositions; at least there are no variants of these figures in Zijl's architectural sculpture."] (Broekhuis et al. Lambertus Zijl 1866-1947. 1990, p. 175)

Also in the collection of the Centraal Museum, Utrecht and the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo.
