Louis van Boeckel (1857-1944)
The artist was born in 1857 in Lier and absolved an apprenticeship as blacksmith in the factory of Verwilt. After his military service, van Boeckel, who is also known as Lodewijk or Lode van Boeckel, restored the latticework of Lier’s town hall and then started working independently. He quickly gained general recognition with his original artworks. He particularly showed off his imaginative designs and technical mastery in representation of animals. In addition to this, van Boeckel created garlands, banisters and grids (even for the White House in Washington). Over time, he reduced his highly ornamental designs in favor of figurative representations. Van Boeckel’s works can be admired today at the Museum Timmermans-Opsomer in Lier. (nlu)
