Katsushika TAITO II
From the tsuzoku sangokushi (?), woodblockprint in color, 19th century
An illustrated popular History of the three Kingdoms.

Passepartout cut out : 5.3 x 10.6 Inches
Frame size: 16.1 x 20 Inches

- Depicted are Emperor Cao Rui of Wei (left) and empress Guo of Wei (right):
(Emperor Cao Rui of Wei, style name Yuanzhong)
Cao Rui (204/5 - 22 January 239), formally known as Emperor Ming of Wei, was the second emperor of the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. By 237, Cao Rui's favorite was no longer empress Mao, but Consort Guo. Once, when Cao Rui was attending a feast hosted by Consort Guo, Consort Guo requested that empress Mao be invited to join as well, but Cao Rui refused and further ordered that no news about the feast is to be given to empress Mao. However, the news leaked, and empress Mao talked about the feast with him anyway. He became exceedingly angry, and killed a number of his attendants whom he suspected of leaking the news to empress Mao, and, inexplicably, ordered empress Mao to commit suicide, even though she was still buried with honors due an emPress, and her family remained honored.

(empress Guo of Wei)
empress Guo (died 263), formally known as empress Mingyuan (literally: "The All-seeing and Discerning empress"), was an emPress of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. She was married to Cao Rui (Emperor Ming), the second emperor of Cao Wei. What little is known about her appears to show that she was an intelligent woman who fought hard to try to prevent her empire from falling into the hands of the Sima clan (Sima Yi and his sons Sima Shi and Sima Zhao) during the reigns of her adopted son Cao Fang and his cousin Cao Mao, but was unable to stem the tide.

Katsushika TAITO II (formal name: Fujiwara Kondo), ukiyo-e painter, print artist and illustrator, was one of HOKUSAI's best pupils.
Active years from 1810 to 1853
Taito was a samurai of the Toyooka clan, who originally lived in Yamashita in Kozuke Province. He seems to have met Hokusai in Nagoya in the mid-1810s. He collaborated with him on the second volume of Hokusai manga, which was published there in 1815. He moved to Edo and took the name of Taito II in or after 1820, when Hokusai changed his name to Iitsu. From that date on, Taito's works are signed 'Katsushika Taito', or 'Genryusai Taito'. He is generally referred to as 'Taito II'. He had the closest working relationship with Hokusai among all the master's pupils. Taito is also called Inu Hokusai (Dog Hokusai) when people caught him forging his master's signature on one of his own designs.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong in the 14th century, is a historical novel based on the events in the turbulent years near the end of the Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history, starting in 169 and ending with the reunification of the land in 280. The story (part historical, part fiction) chronicles the lives of feudal lords and their retainers, who tried to replace the dwindling Han Dynasty or restore it. While the novel actually follows literally hundreds of characters, the focus is mainly on the three power blocs that emerged from the remnants of the Han Dynasty, and would eventually form the three states of Wei, Shu, and Wu. The novel deals with the plots, personal and army battles, intrigues, and struggles of these states to achieve dominance for almost 100 years. This novel also gives readers a sense of how the Chinese view their history in a cyclical lense. The famous opening lines of the novel summarize this view: It is a general truism of this world that anything long divided will surely unite, and anything long united will surely divide
