Notes

The Dutch born artist, Jan de Swart, emigrated to Eagle Rock, California in the early 1940s. While he was the subject of a one-man exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of Art in 1945 and was championed by John Entenza in Arts & Architecture, de Swart's art remained out of the mainstream. His lyrical works handcrafted in wood are mysterious objects related to Surrealism and the sculptures of Picasso and Noguchi. Exhibited: Jan de Swart: Handcrafted Furniture, Louis Newman Galleries, Beverly Hills, Jan. 1994 Literature: Jan de Swart: Handcrafted Furniture, Louis Newman Galleries, illustrated pl. 2
