Jacob Willemsz de Wet (c. 1610-c.1675)
Little is known about the early life of the Haarlem painter. Houbraken mentions him rater secondarily as an art dealer in the biographical sketches of Philip Wouwerman. De Wet, since 1632 member of Haarlem Guild of St. Luke, left a notebook that mentions 34 pupils, such as the landscape and animal painter Paulus Potter. Measured by the number of his students, it seems that de Wet led a large and successful workshop in Haarlem. His son, Jacob II was the only one of de Wet’s children, which also was trained to a painter. The works of De Wet was stylistically influenced by Rembrandt van Rijn. (bde)
