Isaak Vromans was a talented representative the genre of Dutch forest floor still lifes; the present painting is a characteristic example of these so-called ‘sottobosci’ and reveals insects, a snake and a frog.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is laid down on panel and shows light marks, where the frame has rubbed. The paint surface is craquelured and faintly rubbed in some parts. Inspection under UV light reveals a few scattered areas of retouching. The panel measures 49.5 x 36 cm and the frame 64 x 50 cm.

Isaak Vromans (c. 1655-c. 1719)
Isaak Vromans was an important Dutch still life painter. Born in Delft, he was probably active in The Hague, where he died around 1719. Vromans was specialized in the genre of forest floor still lifes (‘sottobosco’). Today, examples of his artistic output can be found, for instance, in the Worcester Art Museum. (cbo)
