Henry Hetherington Emmerson (1831-1895) "WAITING FOR THE BOATS" signed and dated Oct. 1870 oil on canvas 110 x 85cms; 43 x 33in.
EXHIBITED: The Central Exchange, Newcastle, 1870 and there purchased for £10 by Hugh Taylor Esq. of Chipchase Castle, Northumberland. Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, 2003, Cullercoats - A North East Colony Of Artists. Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance, Cornwall, Painting At The Edge - Britain's Coastal Colonies, 1880-1930. In both of the above exhibitions the painting was featured in the exhibition books authored by Laura Newton. Newport Museum & Art Gallery, on public view, 2006; From 2007 till the present time this painting has been on loan to the National Trust at Cragside House, Rothbury, Northumberland.
NB Reference to this picture is made in the Historical Notes on Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and Monkseaton by William Weaver Thomlinson. The two women in this painting were regular sitters for the artist, Meggy Arthur and an elderly Betty Donkin. They are depicted waiting on the beach for the return of the fishing fleet, with the village of Cullercoats in the background. Emmerson had moved to Cullercoats around 1865 and he retained a home there for the rest of his life painting studies of the harbour and the daily life of the fisherfolk. He exhibited at the Royal Academy until two years short of his death showing a total of fifty eight works, including several Cullercoats character studies similar to this. See illustration
