Item Overview

Description

Self-portrait. 1937. Vintage gelatin silver print. 29,3 x 24 cm (51,9 x 42,7 cm). Titled Auto-portrait, artist's name, dated in unknown hand in ink, numbered 20 in pencil on the verso, mounted along upper edge of print in mat.
Florence Henri was born in New York to a French father and a German mother. She moved around Europe studying art in Paris, Rome, London and Berlin, finally settling in Paris in 1925. She later travelled to Dessau to study at the Bauhaus. There she was strongly influenced and encouraged by Lázló Moholy-Nagy and his wife Lucia Moholy. In 1929 Henri participated in the Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart. The self-portrait was an important and reoccuring motif in Henri's work, where she often employed the use of the mirror as a prop. - Traces of previous mounting on the verso, small cut and loss of paper in the lower right and corners, slight edge wear, minimal time staining along lower edge, otherwise a fine tonal print in very good condition.
Lit.: Diana C. du Pont. Florence Henri. Artist-Photographer of the Avant-Garde. San Francisco Museum of Art 1990.
