Notes

'At Leerdam Frans Molenaar was unable to indulge in his preference for the colour red. But armed with the knowledge that red glass is used [i]n Murano, Molenaar decided to visit the workshop of Adriano Berengo. In preparation for their trip, Frans Molenaar and his assistant Mirjam Bax spent countless hours studying form. [...] Dozens of stacked spherical forms, drinking glasses and vase shapes were recorded. This became a period of innovation in Molenaars' oeuvre because up till then he had only made dishes and vases, objects that could easily accommodate a bunch of flowers. [...] The colour red is the connecting factor as is the circle. Spherical forms in the primary colours of red, white, blue and yellow combine to form a sculpture. [...] Molenaar's Murano intermezzo was crowned by two high sculptures in the colours red, white and blue.' [Referring to the sculptures in this lot.] (Makiri Mual, 'Frans Molenaar: l'art de toucher'. In: M. Mual, Frans Molenaar - Haute Verrerie, Maarssen: Blauw Media Uitgeverij BV, 1998, p. 10-11).
