Lot 100: Hans G. Casparius (1900-1986), Views of Daily Life, c. 1920/30s

Hans G. Casparius avoided exaggerated compositions, but rather preferred the direct relationship to his sitters. His pictures therefore captivate through credibility and high documentary standards. The present set is composed of four vintage gelatin silver prints depicting different views of daily life in Germany. The works show a girl working in a factory, a student reading in the library, another girl assembling a telephone and a group of children playing with their teachers in a park.

The vintage gelatin silver prints are verso typographically titled. The works are in good condition considering their age. Three photographs reveal small nail holes in the upper corners. The edges are slightly frilled and the depictions are affected by tiny scratches and retouchings. The verso sides are covered with traces of an old mounting. The image sizes are equal to the sheet sizes of c. 29 x 30 cm.

Hans G. Casparius (1900-1986)
Hans Gustav Casparius was born in Berlin and is one of the most renowned photographers of the Weimar Republic. In 1930, he was active as a documentary photographer for the first time and accompanied the German travel writer Arnold Höllriegel (1883-1939) to Alaska and Canada. A few years later, in 1935, Casparius emigrated to London, where he founded the production company Music in Vision, Ltd. with the German film critic Hans Nathan Feld (1902-1992). The extensive photographic estate by Hans G. Casparius is now preserved in the Deutsche Kinemathek. (cbo)
