This black and white photograph was created by the German photographer and movie maker Hans G. Casparius. Depicted is a scene at a lake showing a couple on a rowboat. Casparius always aimed at capturing with his camera authentic moments. The print is rich in light and dark contrasts and detailedness. Especially his unpretentious instant photographs are popular items as impressive historical documents of time on the international auction market.

The gelatin silver print is verso inscribed in pencil ‘Foto: Hans G. Casparius’. The photograph is mounted under a mat reversible with an adhesive stripe along the upper edge and framed. The work is in good age-according condition. In the corners are eight small pin holes. In the area to the right of the boat are small punctual losses of the surface. The reverse is somewhat unfresh. The frame shows clear traces of wear. The sheet-sized photograph measures 41 x 60 cm. The total dimensions, including the frame, are 52.5 x 72.5 cm.

Hans G. Casparius (1900-1986)
Hans Gustav Casparius was born in Berlin and is one of the most renowned photographers of the Weimar Republic. In 1930, he was active as a documentary photographer for the first time and accompanied the German travel writer Arnold Höllriegel (1883-1939) to Alaska and Canada. A few years later, in 1935, Casparius emigrated to London, where he founded the production company Music in Vision, Ltd. with the German film critic Hans Nathan Feld (1902-1992). The extensive photographic estate by Hans G. Casparius is now preserved in the Deutsche Kinemathek. (tm)
