Description

Groll, Andreas: Sarcophagus of Kazimierz the Great Sarcophagus of the Polish king Kazimierz the Great at Wawel Cathedral, Krakow. 1850s. Albumen print on thin paper. 25 x 21,7 cm. Signed in lower left corner in the negative; annotated by Groll (?) in pencil on the verso, mounted in corners (lower corners loose) to wove paper.
Andreas Groll, considered a prominent photographer of architecture, opened a studio in Vienna in 1857. In 1865 he published an extensive catalog of his works for sale. He exhibited in Paris (1855) and Vienna (1864) and was included in the seventh Exposition of the Société française de photographie (1865). Groll produced industrial landscapes and ethnographic costume studies as well as the famous documentation of the Ambraser Collection of Arms. He worked primarily in Poland, Austria-Hungary and southern Germany and documented the architecture and cities of these areas. - Paper buckled in corners from mounting, fading in side edges, some paper loss in lower corners which have also been backed, diagonal crease in mid portion, otherwise in good condition and a rare early print by Groll.
