It was clear from his early days at the Venice Academy that Sormani was a talented landscape painter, which led to further studies at the Art Institutes in both Naples and Urbino. However, that didn't stop him from creating some beautiful advertising posters noted for their superior decorative qualities for such clients as Mele and Angeli-Frua. His poster for this third Venice seaside exhibition of painting, sketches, sculpture and other objet d'art combines a certain pagan sensibility with reverent Art Nouveau execution, creating something akin to a profane stained glass window-style panel in the process. In fact, were it not for the presence of a single foot, it would be tempting to say that the bare-breasted art bearer was a mermaid luring us with treasures from the deep. That foot does complicate things though. Regardless of such trifling, Sormani's handiwork is mesmerizing, a work of art unto itself.
