Item Overview

Description

Gare Ginnico-Sportive/Genova. 1925.A symbol of Genoa, La Lanterna (The Lighthouse), is a seventy-seven meter (230 feet) tall tower, consisting of two stacked, squared blocks of roughly the same height, both gracefully adorned with a projecting terrace. Erected on rock approximately forty meters (131 feet) in height, the top of La Lanterna stands 117 meters (384 feet) above sea level, which allows its light to be seen from more than fifty kilometers (thirty-one miles) away. It has welcomed vessels and guided them into the harbor for centuries-in its present form since 1534, though unofficial sources push that date back to 1128 when another tower stood on the spot. Here it serves to attract people to a triumvirate of competitions-athletic, pyrotechnic and musical, two of which are represented graphically in the design-taking place throughout the entire 1925 summer that were intended to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign of the House of Savoy's King Victor Emmanuel III. A painter and illustrator, Trematore studied at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts before relocating to Genoa, where he garnered critical and public praise with a series of one-man exhibitions. In terms of poster production, he would remain active throughout the 1920s with designs that targeted tourism and navigation companies.
