Splendid depiction of the Madonna in a cartouche, surrounded by flowers, executed in fine brush stroke. A signed version of the composition, dated 1646, is located in the Ashmoleon Museum in Oxford (inventory number A 278). The Madonna has presumably been painted by an artist from the circle of Ykens.

Condition:
The painting is in good overall condition, showing fine craquelure, some tiny stains and small paint losses. There are pressure marks caused by the stretcher along the margins. The inspection under UV light reveals scattered small strokes of retouching to the background and the robe of the Madonna. The frame shows slight signs of use. The painting dimensions are 114 x 93 cm, while the frame measures 138.5 x 117.5 cm.

Frans Ykens (1601-1691/93)
The Flemish still-life painter Frans Ykens (1601-1691 / 93) or François Ykens, was born in Antwerp and was a student of Osias Beert the Elder. Ykens was acquainted with Peter Paul Rubens, who has owned several still lifes of the artist, which can be seen today in the Rubens House in Antwerp. Futhermore, works by Ykens are on display at the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen and in other major museum collections. (cko)
