Item Overview

Description

- CAMPERT, Remco (Dutch 1929). Ten lessons with Timothy, 1950. Paris, privately published, 1950. 4to. Half cloth folder, manufactured by Simon Vinkenoog with typescript title label 'Ten Lessons with Timothy Remco Campert 1951' on the front cover. Vinkenoog removed the staples in the left margin of the fragile leaves and fixed them in a half-cloth pamphlet binder, signed in pencil 'Vinkenoog' on label "Pressboard Manufactured by Gaylord Bros. Inc., Syracuse N.Y./Stockton, Calif." (inner back cover). 14 leaves typescript (unfolded!) in purple, stencilled by Rudy Kousbroek in the offices of the UNESCO in Paris. Colophon text typescript: "Deze bundel is geinspireerd op de gelijknamige gramofoonplaat van Dizzy Gillespie." dit is No [filled in 'een'] Parijs, December 1950". Signed and numbered ('een') in red biro. With signed inscription in blue pen: "voor Simon Parijs 5 Januari 1950 (= 1951!)" (first endpaper). Signed again in black pen on title: "Den Haag 25 november 2011" on the occasion of the symposium ‘Remco Campert. 60 jaar dichter’ in the 'Letterkundig Museum Den Haag [which turned out to be the 61st anniversary of his writing career after legendary antiquarian bookseller Max Schuhmacher pointed at this copy of Campert's previously unrecorded debut]. Edges sl. browned, vague vertical folds first 2 pp., spine sl. worn, but overall in good condition.

Notes

Very rare. This elusive debut of Remco Campert was hardly known to exist before 2011, see above. According to Nick ter Wal there are only 4 copies known, all numbered 'een'. From December 22, 1950 Campert and Kousbroek stayed in the house of Vinkenoog in the Boulevard Jean-Jaurès 21 while the latter went on a honeymoon to London. They returned to Paris January 5 1951. The first copy of his first book was a gift for Vinkenoog upon his return and was dated erroneously "1950" by Campert, a common mistake in the beginning of a new year. Campert: "ik denk dat we iedereen nummer 1 gunden. En ook uit een soort jonge honden speelsheid". This copy unfolded, obviously because it was presented personally, the folded ones probably sent by mail to Holland.
