Eugène Ionesco (1909-1994)
Eugène Ionesco was born in 1909 in the Romanian town of Slatina, but in 1913 the family moved to Paris. Early the artist showed an interest in literature and studied from 1928 French at the University of Bucharest. Besides, he wrote poetry, articles for the feuilleton and literary criticism. After studying Ionesco taught in schools until 1938 and then went back to France to do a doctorate. After a brief return to Romania in 1942, he moved permanently to France, where then in 1948 his first play was created, which was first performed in 1950. In the 1980s, Ionesco became ill with depression, and began painting as therapy. Also many prints originate from this period. (fea)
