Øistein Thurman-Nielsen was the husband of the painter Gunnvor Advocaat. He participated in the 10th Roma Quadriennale, the first special exhibition for foreign artists working in Italy. A 223 page catalogue was issued for this event, which was held in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the summer of 1977. Giampaolo Chillè for Gamm, the Museum for Modern Art of Messina, Sicily: "After residing for a few years in Rome (1960-1968), together with his wife, the painter Gunnvor Advocaat, the artist settled in Taormina, making Sicily his second home, where he always returned at the end of his incessant travels around the world. Quite different from the Eternal City, where he was enchanted by the charm of Antonio Corpora's works and where he returned in 1977 to take part in the 10th National Art Quadrennial [...], Taormina was a source of new inspiration for Thurman and of intense solicitations that determined a sensitive change to his style, directing it towards evocative tones and the recovery of a certain expressionist figurativism, these characters are recognisable in different works depicting anonymous as well as emblematic Sicilian characters."
