Description

Constance Frederica Gordon-Cumming (1837-1924), rare watercolour depicting a mountain stronghold with huts and native figures, entitled verso 'Bukutia' - Mountain Stronghold near the river Sigatoka-Viti Levu - Fiji', 15cm x 22.5cm. Provenance: By descent to the current vendor from an ancestor who collected a number of Fijian artefacts in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century whilst in the Diplomatic Service Constance Gordon-Cumming was a prolific travel writer and landscape painter and published several books including 'At Home in Fiji'. This watercolour was probably painted during her time in Fiji in the 1880s. Many of her works are on display in Museums around the world
