Condition:
The painting is in good condition showing few signs of wears consistent with its age. Isolated small retouching in the sky and in the border area visible under UV light. Weak craquelure and punctually small color chipping in the upper right corner (framed not visible). The varnish has lightly darkened, otherwise overall of good impression. The image dimensions are 47 x 64 cm, the framed dimensions 61 x 77.5 cm.

Charles van der Eycken (1809-1891)
Charles van der Eycken was born in Aerschot in 1809. He graduated from the Academy in Leuven, followed by study trips to Holland, Germany and to the Ardennes. He painted mainly mountainous and channel landscapes as well as atmospheric winter landscapes with chiaroscuro effects, influenced by the Dutch 17th century paintings. His son Charles van der Eycken II (1859-1923) gained reputation as a famous animal painter. (cru)
