Carl Max Rebel (1874- after 1954)
Carl Max Rebel was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Academy under Woldemar Friedrich and Josef Scheurenberg until 1894. Thereafter, he spent many years of study in Italy, Holland and in the Lüneburger Heide (Northern Germany). His favorite subjects were landscapes, portraits, nudes, still lifes and theatrical subjects. His work was influenced mainly by the artists Böcklin, Feuerbach and Thoma. Moreover, he focused on the personality of the poet Stefan George for four decades. In 1943, his Berlin studio was bombed and his life's work lost. He then settled in Schneverdingen, in the Lüneburger Heide, dedicating himself to religious subjects and allegories. (cko)
