All three of the selections singled-out for prominence from this July issue of Scribner's would have made for enticing promotional artwork. However, the powers that be decided upon 'The Captains,' and thus an uncredited artist in all likelihood Campbell delivered this vision of an intent sculler for whom nothing exists beyond the act of rowing in order to bring readers to the magazine. Born in St. Louis, Campbell studied in Paris under Whistler, Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He was a member of the American Art Association in Paris and the Society of Illustrators in New York.
