Item Overview

Description

Still life with weapons. Circa 1855. Salt print from a paper negative. 22 x 16,5 cm. Photographer's stamp in lower left corner and number 80 in the negative in lower edge.
Adolphe Bilordeaux was a lithographer who started a career in photography as of 1854. He studied with Le Gray and became a founding member of the Société Française de la Photographie. He worked in the waxed paper process until 1857. Aside from his portraits, still lifes and architectural images, his exceptional sculpture images received special praise at the Paris World's Fair in 1855. Prints by Bilordeaux are often found pale and faded and this is a rare stronger print with a good neutral color. - Professionally restored tears and paper loss in left edge, otherwise an atmospheric print in very good condition.
