Item Overview

Description

BEN NASON
New Haven Railroad/Cape Cod.
Nason combines day and night to create an atmospheric poster for Cape Cod, the arm-shaped peninsula and easternmost portion of Massachusetts, which was originally connected to the mainland, yet effectively transformed into a large island with the opening of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914. Due to its constantly moving and dangerous shoals, Cape Cod historically has been the host of numerous beacons that warned ships of the danger. Instead of singling-out a specific lighthouse, the artist monolithically installs a single exemplar at poster's center and cleverly calls upon its powerful illuminating beam to create a perfect day for sailing.
