The scene of legends depicts the attempt of the jester Kunz van der Rosen to free Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1518), who got imprisoned in Bruges in 1488. Van der Rosen combats the guard and is directing the Emperor the way out of the prison. However, Maximilian I. refuses his help.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition consistent with age. With several tiny retouching to the clothing and faces of the figures. With minimal marginal wear due to the framing. With renewed varnish. The frame with normal traces of use. The dimensions of the sheet are 36.5 x 29 cm and the frame measures 46.3 x 40 cm.

Anton Petter (1781-1858)
The historic painter was born in Mariahilf outside of Vienna. He was a pupil of the Viennese Academy and went to Rome in 1808. He was a professor since 1823 and director of the painting and sculpting school of the Vienna Academy since 1829. Examples of his works are the Classicist high altarpiece (Madonna with Child and Angels, 1826) in the Hofkirche in Baden close to Vienna as well as the altarpieces in the Dom zu Olmütz in the Pfarrkirche of Kremsier. The Joanneum in Graz holds the paintings 'Meeting og Emperor Maximilian with his bride in Gent', 'Sigismund and Genovefa' and 'Kunz von der Rosen tries to free Maximilian'. (tm)
