American Airlines/Chicago. ca. 1959.Though nicknamed the "Second City"-in reference to Chicago's rebirth after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, not to its place in the pecking order of major U.S. cities behind New York-Chicago's architecture is first-rate, its skyline as seen from Lake Shore Drive providing motorists and pedestrians alike with a dazzling cityscape second to none. And that's the view we're given in this Bencsath poster for American Airlines (with mention of lesser-known Pacific Air Lines)-albeit in a stylized manner from an appropriate bird's-eye vantage point. In addition to his poster work, Bencsath designed several postage stamps.
