Notes

The art historian Wolfgang Schulz, the author of 'Herman Saftleven, 1609 - 1685' (1982), considered adding this very painting to the second edition of his book, which unfortunately has not yet been published. In the letter to Mr. Jonker from 1996, Schulz mentions that the subject of the painting, which probably depicts a valley in the Siebengebirge, is rather unusual for Saftleven's oeuvre, and this makes it particularly interesting. Wolfgang Schulz expresses his intention to examine the painting in person within the next three months, but no further details are known about this meeting.

According to the art dealer William Thuiller, among the landscapes by Herman Saftleven this painting is related to the 'Vintage of the Rhine' (1659, the Copenhagen Museum). He also emphasises the exceptional provenance of the work: "The painting was in the possession of the Bosanquet family at the beginning of the nineteenth century; it remained with the daughter of Judge Bosanquet until the end of that century, at which point it passed to her son, the grandfather of the present owner. It may well have belonged to antecedents of Judge Bosanquet in the eighteenth century, but there is no documentation to prove this." What is certain is that Judge Arthur Bosanquet had a prime location to hang this painting: by 1881 he moved with his family to Ravenscroft, the birthplace of Bertrand Russell.
