Item Overview

Description

A J Jansen, early twentieth century oil on canvas in glazed gilt frame - SS Brussels at sea, signed, inscribed Antwerp and dated 1912, 46.5cm x 68.5cm. Sold with a framed collection of photographs and text relating to SS Brussels (SS Brussels was built in 1902 as a passenger ferry and was deployed on the Harwich to Hook of Holland route. During the First World War, the vessel was commanded by Captain Charles Fryatt who was eventually tried at a Court Martial and shot by a firing squad for his involvement in the stopping of a German U Boat. Previous to this he had been awarded an inscribed gold watch for his heroic actions in trying to stop the German U Boat. Sadly the watch was to be an incriminating item and sealed the case against him, although Fryatt never actually sunk the U Boat. Three years after his death his body was returned to England and a funeral with full honours, at St Paul's Cathedral took place with the burial at Dovercourt. SS Brussels ended her days under the name Lady Brussels and was eventually scrapped in 1929
