    • JACOPO ZUCCHI Florence, Italy (1541) / Rome, Italy (1598) "Portrait of a woman, traditionally identified as the Infanta Catalina Micaela"
      May. 10, 2023

JACOPO ZUCCHI Florence, Italy (1541) / Rome, Italy (1598) "Portrait of a woman, traditionally identified as the Infanta Catalina Micaela"

      Est: €42,000 - €56,000

Oil on copper On the back apocryphal annotation: "Fontana" Attached report by Dr. Antonio Vannugli signed in Rome in 2012 attributing the work to Zucchi. Provenance: Private collection, Salamanca Private collection, Madrid The woman pictured here, in her thirties, appears richly dressed in a black cape with pearl and gold medallions over a silver-colored satin dress, with a lechuguilla collar and jeweled with a necklace , earrings and veil with pearls. The identity of the portrayed remains unconfirmed, although she has traditionally been identified with the Infanta Catalina Micaela. Zuchi was trained in Vasari's workshop and his career was highly relevant both in his native Florence and later in Rome. A key figure of Mannerism, his activity as a portrait painter was not very extensive, barely three autonomous portraits of his hand are known, but he was very relevant, possibly being the second best portrait painter of Counter-Reformation Rome, behind Scipione Pulzone. Vannungli in his report bases his attribution of this work on the stylistic coincidence with the painter's known works, characterized by hardness in modelling, position of the head, slight smile, arching of the eyebrows and attention to detail, as in the meticulous work of the neck lace. In addition, due to the tones of the painting and its more natural light, Vannugli indicates that it was painted from the late 1970s, at the height of the artist's maturity. Measurements:
