Johan Zoffany: Claude Martin's Zoffany Album. A collection of 53 drawings. A few signed, dated and/or inscribed. Black chalk or "trois crayons". C.410 x 280 mm.

          Est: kr400,000 - kr600,000

Claude Martin's Zoffany Album. A collection of fifty-three drawings by Johan Zoffany, executed during the 1790’s exclusively for his friend in India, Colonel Claude Martin. Forty-nine have been rearranged by Benjamin Wolff in a 19th century album. The remaining four on separate mounts. A few signed, dated and/or inscribed. Black chalk or "trois crayons" on grey laid paper. Sheet size c. 410 x 280 mm. Kursiv: Of indisputable importance is this collection of autograph drawings executed by Johan Zoffany at the request of his friend Claude Martin in India: “This Book Belong to Lieutenant Colonel Claude Martin Given to his Friend Baron De Zofanni For to Fill it up with his Remarks when at his Pleasure to return it to the Colonel by the Best opportunity at Lucknow” -as the first title page reads. Fifty-three drawings (of fifty-four) were rearranged and bound in an album by Benjamin Wolff after his return from India - adding a second title page reading: "LIV haandtegninger udförte i Indien efter General Claude Martins Anmodning af Baron de Zoffany. Tilhører B. Wolff" (LIV Hand drawings, executed in India by Baron de Zoffany at General Claude Martin’s request. Belongs to B.Wolff). The collection complements and adds significantly to Zoffany’s exceedingly rare corpus of drawings and offers new valuable knowledge to the artist’s late oeuvre. However, the two title pages raises the question as to how, where and when the drawings were executed. In an attempt to establish a chronology the following text distinguishes between Claude Martins Book and Benjamin Wolff’s Album. Johan Zoffany sailed for India in 1783. He prospered by painting portraits and conversation pieces for the Anglo-Indian society. In Lucknow Zoffany met Claude Martin (1735-1800) - one of the best-known figures of eighteenth-century north India. Martin was a man of many and varied talents and of notable wealth - a connoisseur and collector, and a generous patron to British artists who found their way to Lucknow. He became a lifelong friend of Zoffany while working on the first version of "Colonel Mordaunt’s Cock Match" (c. 1784-1786, Tate Galllery). In the painting Martin is depicted on the right side, throned in the midst of European adventures, orientalists and friends. In one of his finest Indian paintings, "Self-portrait with Colonel Antoine Polier, Claude Martin and John Wombwell "(1786-87) Zoffany depicts a circle of friends, their shared interests in art, literature and connoisseurship, and their fascination with India itself and its customs. Johan Zoffany left India after a six year stay and arrived in England August 1789. Prior to his departure from Lucknow it seems plausible that Claude Martin, as a token of dear friendship, presented a book to him with the above cited title page. In Wolff’s Album we find two portraits of Claude Martin – one bearing Zoffany’s comment “This I Find Of Wery Leick”. These may have been executed during his stay with Martin in Lucknow or more likely in England and after studies from India. The remaining drawings seem to have been executed during the 1790s. Zoffany’s remarkable self-portrait and a few others are dated respectively 1796 and 1797. How and when Martins Book was returned to Lucknow is uncertain. Despite the distance Zoffany and Martin had remained in contact and as Zoffany continuously acted on behalf of Martin in acquiring statues, furniture etc. in England it is plausible the Book of drawings was returned in one of these shipments.

Attributed to Johann Zoffany, portrait of Friedrich Schwindl, oil on canvas, circa 1765, 71" h x 55" w (frame). An 18th Century portrait of Friedrick Schwindl attributed to Johan Zoffany, (1733-1810). Schwindl, a violin virtuoso and Konzertmeister, is seated presumably just before the mid-day concert as indicated by the pocket watch. The positioning of Schwindl's hands and fingers suggest bowing posture; the bow resting upon music sheets is a Cramer bow designed by Wilhelm Cramer and was popular in use roughly between 1750-85. The original music manuscripts have been identified by Prof. Reinhard Strohm of Oxford University as 5 different individual movements for violin Chamber Music by Schwindl belonging to a set of 12 violin duets (Divertissements op 4) which gained popularity between 1765-75 and were printed in Amsterdam in 1767-8 and re-printed at least 11 times in London. Provenance: Was part of the collection of Viscount Furness of England, sold mid-20th century at Christie's London, subsequently auctioned in Chicago, from a Massachusetts estate.

Large adjustable pin cylinder, short pendulum. Stephen Rimbault Stephen Rimbault (working 1744-88) was a famous clock maker of Huguenot descent, particularly noted for his 'twelve-tuned Dutchmen', clocks which played twelve tunes, with moving figures in front of decoratedbackgrounds. He did business in Great Andrew's Street, St Giles. Johann Zoffany (1733-1810) The miniature painting on the dial is attributed to the German painter Johann Zoffany; the style takes its inspiration from the elegant gallantries by Nicolas Lancret (1690-1743) or Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Johann Zoffany was one of the most renowned personalities in British art during the 18th century; he was most famous for his portraits of the royal family. Zoffany was born in Frankfurt/Main, the son of a Bohemian architect to the court of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis in Frankfurt. Zoffany was a pupil of Francesco Solimena and later studied in Italy. He went to London at the age of 27, where he eventually became a protégé of famous actor David Garrick and painted mainly theatre motifs. Garrick introduced Zoffany to King George III, who commissioned him to create portraits of theroyal family. The king was very fond of Zoffany's style and nominated him for the Royal Academy of Art, which opened in the same year. When the king cancelled a commission in the 1770s because Zoffany had integrated non-nobles in the painting, he moved to Italy and lived in Florence for most of the time. He continued his success as a painter after another move in 1783 to Calcutta. Zoffany came back to London a rich man in 1789, but he never replicated his earlier success in England. We know that Zoffany painted clock dials in the workshop of Stephen Rimbault for about six months after his arrival in England; he took his inspiration from the gallantries of Lancret or Watteau (see Penelope Treadwell "Johan Zoffany", Editor Paul Holberton, London, 2009). Cond.: Case: very good, small restaurations. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running.

Provincial Follower of Johann Joseph Zoffany (British, 1733-1810) Portrait of an officer of the militia, small full-length, in uniform holding a telescope and a sword in a landcape oil on canvas h:73.50 w:60.50 cm Provenance: Sir John Burgoyne, 9th Bt. (1796-1858), Sutton Park, Potton, Bedfordshire. Other Notes: There is another version of this portrait, which belongs to the Royal Norfolk Regiment Museum. That institution has identified the sitter as "Major Money, Norfolk Militia". Whoever the officer featured here actually was, he wears a simple scarlet undress coat. The garment is single-breasted and it has a black cape collar and round black cuffs, along with white cloth lining. A single row of gilt buttons runs down the coat's front. There are no buttons on the collar or the cuffs. A single gold epaulette adorns the officer's right shoulder. It has a black shoulder strap edged with gold lace. The officer wears a white ruffled shirt with a white roller, a white waistcoat with gilt buttons and pocket flaps, white breeches, and a pair of fashionable black leather boots with light brown or tan tops. The sitter wears his hair unpowdered and either clubbed or en queue with side curls. His black cocked hat is a plain affair. Its only embellishment is a black cockade attached to the left front by a gilt button and gold lace loop. The officer grasps his sword with his left hand and he points to something off canvas with the spyglass held in his right. The officer's coat closely resembles that worn by Colonel Sir Armine Wodehouse, Fifth Baronet, 2nd Regiment of Norfolk Militia (Eastern Norfolk Militia Regiment), in his 1773 portrait by Thomas Hickey (see Redcoat Images, No. 1,892). The only readily apparent difference between the two is that Wodehouse does not sport an epaulette on his coat. That likeness, along with David Morier's circa 1759 portrait of Wodehouse (see Redcoat Images, No. 1,888), is republished in this instalment. Eric Schnitzer believes that "Major Money" could actually be John Money, an officer whose lengthy military career intersected with the Norfolk Militia both before and after the American War of Independence. John Money served as Lieutenant General John Burgoyne's deputy quartermaster general during the Saratoga Campaign of 1777. Captured at the Battle of Bemis Heights, Money was soon exchanged, and he returned to England. Furthermore, Eric reveals there is good evidence that Money became a patron to the artist Ralph Earl. Money had his portrait painted by Earl soon after his return home. The present portrait could either be attributed to Earl or possibly John S. C. Schaak.
