          19TH C. ITALIAN MARBLE SCULPTURE

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Emilio Zocchi (Florence, 1835-1913) Young Michelangelo sgn. Galleria Bazzanti Firenze; 20.5”h; 8”w; 12”d The original is in the Pitti Palace, Florence. The Bazzanti Gallery in Florence was established in 1822 and exists to this day. It was listed in the guide books during the 19th c. Grand Tour to Italy. Zocchi, first trained in the studios of private artists and later entered various Florentine academic circles. Here, taken from biographers Giorgio Vasari and Ascanio Condivi, Zocchi narrates a significant episode in the life of Michelangelo, the meeting between Lorenzo Medici, known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, and Michelangelo at the age of 15 when Lorenzo became his patron. According to the story, Michelangelo was intrigued by an ancient sculpture of a faun’s head. Deciding to make a copy of it, he created his own version of the face which was partially missing in the ancient piece, particularly reducing the amount of teeth.
