Marie Zimmermann Bronze Lion Letter Opener

              Est: $600 - $800

Roman Bronze Works. 8 1/2" by 1 1/2" by 1 1/8". Marie Zimmermann (1879 - 1972) is known for Sculpture. Marie Zimmermann (June 17, 1879 – June 17, 1972) was an American designer and maker of jewelry and metalwork. She is noted for fine craftsmanship and innovative design in a variety of different mediums and styles. Calling herself a craftsman rather than an artist, she employed many different crafts in her work such as metalsmithing, carving, painting, and sculpting. A 1926 article in the Brooklyn Eagle by Harriette Ashbrook called her perhaps the most versatile artist in the country. Over 25 years, Zimmermann worked ten to twelve hours a day to master all of the different crafts she wanted to use in her art. The earliest record of her employed work is the annual arts and crafts exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago from December 16, 1902 to January 10, 1903. By 1910 Zimmerman had commissions from around the country and opened her own studio in the National Arts Club in New York. She lived in New York and ran her studio at the National Arts Club from about 1910 to 1937. At the age of 33, she designed a large family vacation home in Pike County that shows the rustic elegance of the Arts and Crafts movement and is now a historic site. Inspiring by Cellini and Michelangelo to master a wide range of media and techniques, Zimmermann designed metalwork in a wide range of media (gold, silver, bronze, copper and iron), vessels, daggers and irons, light fixtures, stained-glass windows, garden gates, furniture, and jewelry. Much of her eclectic work was inspired by diverse historical precedents, including ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman, and Chinese forms. She experimented freely with materials, surface, color and applied ornament. Many of Zimmermann's pieces were useful as well as decorative. One example, a candlestick with an electric light in the back, combined elegance with utility. The electric light would provide enough illumination for people to see, and the candles would provide atmosphere. Zimmermann used many of her own pieces in her own home and therefore knew the work from the client/user’s perspective as well as the maker/designer’s. She hired and trained six assistants to help execute her designs. Zimmermann closed her studio at the National Arts Club in 1937 and retired in 1940. Her whole family had died during a span of five years. The government was also urging her to do better bookkeeping, especially in regards to the valuable materials she was using. She eventually left New York City to settle on the family farm. Zimmermann was an avid fisher and hunter, and lived for over forty years with her life partner Ruth Allen (1884–1969), a former actress and screenwriter. Moving to Punta Gorda, Florida, in 1969, Zimmermann died in Florida on her 93rd birthday in 1972. Her ashes were scattered on the family farm.

In 1921 she exhibited several metal bowls at the Boston Society of Decorative Art. The next year she exhibited pieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Contemporary Art display. She subsequently showed at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts and the Ehrich Galleries of New York City. In 1924, two more shows featured her work, including an exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was awarded the Logan Prize for her jewelry and silverware.Louis Ettlinger (1845-1927) was born in Germany and received his education and training there. In 1866 he emigrated to New York City, and after briefly working as a greengrocer founded the lithographic firm Schumacher & Ettlinger. He was a treasurer of the company that eventually became Crowell-Collier, a major publisher of books and magazines. He was also a director of the Knapp Company. He backed his daughter Flora's husband Giles Whiting in his Persian rug business, serving as President and Director of the Persian Rug Manufactory. He was also a Director of the Realty League of the City of New York. In 1902, he purchased the Henry Ward Beecher estate, Boscobel (designed by Joseph Lyman Silisbee), overlooking the Hudson River in Peekskill, New York, which served as his summer home.

              Est: $1,200 - $2,200

Rare Marie Zimmermann silver travel clock, Tiffany & Co. Opens to reveal a square faced clock signed Tiffany & Co., Movado works. Reverse is engraved with "Marie Zimmermann 15 Gamercy Park, New York" with the patent markings and other various illegible hallmarks, no. 1183248. Note: Marie Zimmermann (1878-1972) is known as one of America's great female metalsmiths of the Art Deco period. Known for her work with both jewelry and the decorative arts she was made popular by her elegant and sophisticated designs. Soft and subtle her pieces are featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Chicago Institute of Art as well as private collections around the world. Zimmermann was a student at the Pratt Institute and a member of the Art Students League of Manhattan, and studied the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to find her inspiration and finally love for Greek and Egyptian design. This clock was created for Tiffany for their Movado line, but was kept as a memento by the artist to remember her work with the studios, which was common when Zimmermann was displeased with the final product. L: 2 in., 60.0 grams PROVENANCE: From the private collection of Marie Zimmermann's long time friend and companion.
