Item Overview

Description

Rare Marie Zimmermann silver travel clock, Tiffany & Co.

Opens to reveal a square faced clock signed Tiffany & Co., Movado works. Reverse is engraved with "Marie Zimmermann 15 Gamercy Park, New York" with the patent markings and other various illegible hallmarks, no. 1183248.
Note: Marie Zimmermann (1878-1972) is known as one of America's great female metalsmiths of the Art Deco period. Known for her work with both jewelry and the decorative arts she was made popular by her elegant and sophisticated designs. Soft and subtle her pieces are featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Chicago Institute of Art as well as private collections around the world. Zimmermann was a student at the Pratt Institute and a member of the Art Students League of Manhattan, and studied the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to find her inspiration and finally love for Greek and Egyptian design. This clock was created for Tiffany for their Movado line, but was kept as a memento by the artist to remember her work with the studios, which was common when Zimmermann was displeased with the final product.

L: 2 in., 60.0 grams

PROVENANCE:

From the private collection of Marie Zimmermann's long time friend and companion.
