Edwards, 1797. *** A good copy of this ambitious work, with both the rare explanation leaf and the very rare 1874 prospectus by James Bain soliciting subscriptions for a projected set of reproductions of the original watercolours (never issued). Blake had been commissioned by Edwards to illustrate Young's popular work and produced 537 watercolours. As a trial these first four sections or "Nights" were published with 43 engravings by Blake but it presumably did not sell well and no further engravings were made. Sinclair Hamilton (1884-1978), book-collector and author of Early American Book Illustrators and Wood Engravers, 1670-1870, 2 vol., Princeton, 1958-68. He donated his collection to Princeton University Library.

The portrait, landscape, and genre painter Eduard Young was the son of an English actor who settled first in Germany and then in Austria. Having discovered a talent for painting, Young took lessons in portraiture and watercolour from Moritz Michael Daffinger in Vienna, and later turned to landscape and genre painting. In the company of Prince Esterházy, Young travelled to Italy and France in 1851, and later to Sweden, Norway and Denmark. From 1856-1863 he worked at the court of Frederick VII of Denmark in Copenhagen. There Eduard Young received the Great Golden Medal for Art and Science and the title of professor. He spent two years in Vienna, Salzkammergut, and Berchtesgaden before finally choosing Munich as his permanent residence. Here, he turned to genre painting and subsequently mainly to depictions of Bavarian Alpine life. This is reflected in the present lot, which shows a smaller version of the 1872 painting Wedding Procession in the Mountains (today in Upper Austria Regional Museum, inv. no. The scene is most likely set in the surroundings of Unken, Salzburg, and the artist gives us a view of the valley alongside the solemn wedding procession. Eduard Young skilfully sets the scene, showing jubilation and joy, as seen in the young boy at the end of the procession calling down into the valley. Eduard Young (1823 Prag - 1882 München) Brustbildnis eines jungen Mädchens Einfühlsames, heiteres Kinderportrait Youngs. Young war in Wien Schüler Moritz Michael Daffingers und spezialisierte sich auf die Portraitmalerei. 1853 ging er nach Kopenhagen, wo er als hoch geachteter Hofmaler König Friedrich VII. bis zu dessen Tod 1863 viele Bildnisse der Königsfamilie schuf.
