Description

"The Last Supper of the Protestants of Prague". Oil sketch of an episode from the beginning of the Thirty Years War, portrayed in impressive light-dark shades. Oil on canvas. 68.5 x 54 cm. Relined, with the name "Edouard Young" on the original stretcher. An inventory label from Prince Alphonse of Bavaria on the gilded plaster frame (88 x 75 cm).
Edward Young, born in Prague, was King Frederick VII of Denmark's drawing instructor, where he received the title of Professor (Cf. Thieme-Becker, vol. XXVI, p. 360). This study came into the hands of Prince Alphonse of Bavaria from its original possessor, Kaiser Wilhelm II.
