        BRITISH, 1837-1887 THE LADY OF SHALLOT measurements 26 1/2 by 48 in. alternate measurements 67.3 by 121.9 cm signed D W WYNFIELD (lower right) oil on canvas EXHIBITED London, Royal Academy, 1863, no. 489 (with the following text: And at the closing of the day/she loosed the chain, and down she lay,/The broad stream bore her far away.) NOTE Wynfield studied with J.M. Leigh and lived in St. John's Wood, London, where he founded the St. John's Wood Clique. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1859 and 1887, displaying pictures inspired by sixteenth and seventeeth century British history. Wynfield was also an important Victorian photographer, and is considered a pioneer in this field.

        Albumen Prints, one mounted on card and inscribed 'Princep' [sic] in pencil on the reverse of mount, LITERATURE AND REFERENCES The illustrated image is a previously unrecorded portrait of Prinsep by Wynfield. See J. Hacking 2000, pl. 33, for another print of the other portrait study in this lot. CATALOGUE NOTE Valentine Prinsep, the artist, was also the nephew of Julia Margaret Cameron, and provides a link between the bohemian art world of 1860s London, based in the West End, and the Little Holland House set presided over by Sara Prinsep, Julia's sister and Valentine's mother, in Kensington.

        David Wilkie Wynfield six costumed studies - john everett millais, thomas oldham barlow, george frederic watts, henry wyndham phillips, charles frederick keene and an unidentified man, 1860s-1870s Albumen Prints, each mounted on card with coloured border, the majority with labels bearing a photographic facsimile of sitter's signature on the mount below the image, the study of Millais as Dante with 'John Everett Millais R.A.' in pencil and 'John Crompton/Heatherley Studio/79 Newman Street/London W.' in ink on the reverse, the study of Keene with a photographic reproduction of a painting on the reverse, the study of Watts with printed labels 'George Frederick(sic) Watts' on the mount recto and verso, the study of Phillips annotated 'Henry Wyndham Phillips/1820-1868 Portrait Painter;/son of Thos. Phillips R.A.' in pencil on the mount, (6) 212 by 162mm David Wilkie Wynfield (1837-87), a member of the St John's Wood Clique of painters, took up photography as an amateur pursuit in the early 1860s. He is best known for his distinctive 'unsharp' portraits of his artist contemporaries in costume of the medieval and Renaissance periods. Julia Margaret Cameron said of Wynfield that 'to my feeling about his beautiful photography I owed all my attempts & indeed consequently all my success.'
