Richard Woodman (1784-1859) Portrait miniature of Hammel Ingold Strutt (1804-1886) in a double-breasted coat with gold buttons, his collar bearing a gold embroidered anchor signed and inscribed 'Mr Hammel / Ingold Strutt / R.N. / Painted by R. Woodman/ Jany. 1831/ Mr Strutt was a / Grandson of the / celebrated Joseph / Strutt. Antiquarian / Explorer d.d.' (to the reverse) watercolour on ivory, oval, in a chased gilt-metal fausse montre locket frame 6cm Provenance: Bonhams, London, 28th June 2012, lot 120, when acquired by the late Barry Lock (1934-2021) The sitter was the son of Joseph Strutt (1775–1833), librarian to the Duke of Northumberland, and Mary Ann Rolfe, and the grandson of the artist, antiquarian and writer Joseph Strutt (1749-1802). In the Naval List of the British Admiralty, dated 20th March 1834, Strutt is recorded as 'Master of the Navy', a position he was appointed to on 23rd February 1829. According to a contemporary account published in 1840 by the British consul to Cuba, David Turnbull (1794-1851), Hammel was "the sailing master of the Madagascar" and was stationed near Port Royal, Jamaica (see Travels in the West; Cuba with notices of Porto Rico, and the slave trade, 1840, p.427). Another account by Commodore Sir John Strutt Peyton records Hammel Strutt having detained a schooner Feliz, sailing under Portuguese colours about twenty miles east of Port Royal and carrying 326 slaves as cargo (see Accounts and Papers: Slave Trade, Session 5 February - 27 August 1839, vol. XX, 1839, p.79). By 1857, Strutt must have left the Navy and returned to England as he is recorded in Plymouth Archives as having taken out a mortgage for £500 and is referred to simply as "Hammel Ingold Strutt of Southampton, esq". This item is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018 and has been assigned an exemption certificate, Ref. No. 6E8T2YN4. ivory warped
