JAMES MULE MUSEMBI (Africa). "Giraffe". Carved and polychrome wood. Signed on the base. Presents marks of use and wear. Measurements: 265 x 65 x 55 cm. Sculpture in carved and polychrome wood, of great proportions, representing a giraffe. Of African invoice, it could come from Kenya, since in this country a long tradition exists, especially between the craftsmen of the Akamba, in the carving of giraffes with great artistic skill, and usually it is destined to the foreign market. In some spiritual traditions, the height of the giraffe may symbolize a connection between heaven and earth, acting as a bridge between the earthly world and the spiritual world.

§ James Wood (British, 1889-1975) Portrait of Albertine, the artist's daughter, 1948 coloured chalk h:36 w: 43 cm Other Notes: James Wood, painter, draughtsman, writer and aesthete, was born in Southport, Lancashire. He read History at King's College, Cambridge, from 1908-1911; he then studied in Paris, and after etching pursued painting with Percyval Tudor-Hart, before going to Munich. Wood was a member of the Carline Circle after meeting Richard Carline circa 1911. From the 1930s Wood became increasingly fascinated by Persian Art; he learnt Persian and subsequently became art adviser to the Persian government. His own paintings were influenced by Kandinsky, and he had a one man show at Zwemmer Galleries in 1947 and 1955, as well as showing at the Leicester Galleries. A retrospective exhibition was held at Blond Fine Art after his death, where the present painting of his daughter, Albertine, from 1948 was exhibited under number 23. James Wood had strong Cambridge connections throughout his life; from 1955 onwards he seldom exhibited, but did paint several portraits of prominent Cambridge figures, including the Masters of Caius and Jesus Colleges. He was also a co-author of 'Foundations of Aesthetics', along with C K Ogden and Ivor Richards.
