Large British Neo-Classical Oil Painting by William Clarke Wontner (Attr.)

        Est: $5,000 - $15,000

Riveting and Glamorous Oil painting attributed to acclaimed English artist William Clarke Wontner (1857 - 1930) | Late 19th Century or Early 20th Century | The painting is a very large oil on canvas | Housed in a beautiful ornate gold frame | Dimensions: 46″ x 25″, with frame 54″ x 35″ | Painting is in Very Good condition. William Clarke Wontner (17 January 1857 Stockwell, Surrey – 23 September 1930 Worcester) was an English portrait painter steeped in Academic Classicism and Romanticism. Wontner was born in Stockwell, Surrey, the son of noted architect, designer and renderer William Hoff Wontner (1814–1881) and Catherine Smith. Under the tutelage of his father, Wontner worked with John William Godward (1861–1922), a noted exponent of what became known as Greco-Roman style. The two were destined to become great friends. Wontner was part of the neo-classical movement in England, led by Alma-Tadema. His style favoured seductively languorous women against classical or oriental marbled backdrops. His faithfully rendered fabrics draped over patently European models, somehow created an air of Orientalism. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879, at the Society of British Artists and at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. When the Grosvenor Gallery closed in 1890, Wontner exhibited at the New Gallery. Wontner married Jessie Marguerite Keene (1872–1950), daughter of Charles Joseph Keene, on 7 June 1894 at St. Dominic’s Priory Church, Naverstock Hill in Hampstead. The couple had no children. Wontner was buried on 26 September 1930 at Ripple in Worcestershire.

HONEYSUCKLE HONEYSUCKLE 143.5x98cm., 56½x38½in. signed and dated 1907 oil on canvas, unframed PROVENANCE Christie's, 16 March 1973, lot 162, bought by 'Friedman'; Christie's, 26 July 1974, lot 145 EXHIBITED probably Royal Academy, 1907 no. 263, entitled "Portrait of a Lady" NOTE Wontner, who is more commonly associated with Classical and Oriental beauties, also enjoyed a thriving portrait practice. His commissioned works such as those of Mrs. Duff Assheton-Smith (New Gallery 1900), Elsie Maud Huggins (dated 1900) as well as Colonel John Gordon Wolridge-Gordon and his wife Isabel Wolridge-Gordon (both circa 1911), all showed the model, as here, in contemporary dress. Although it is tempting to suggest that the present portrait was of his wife, Jessie Marguerite née Keene (1871-1950), who sat for a number of the artist's works, the young lady is clearly younger than the 35-year-old Jessie. The size of the canvas also suggests a commissioned work and given its date can be assumed to be Wontner's 1907 Royal Academy exhibit. The young lady holds a bunch of honeysuckle, a flower that symbolized friendship, love and devotion. This painting is to be included in the forthcoming Wontner Catalogue Raisonné, currently being compiled by Alice Munro-Faure, to whom we are grateful for the above entry.

Canvas has been cut down at the lower edge; pigment separation in the dark background around the figure and some on the vest; pigment has creased on face and neck, possibly due to canvas shrinking. Under UV light: the signature has been added over the old varnish; it appears to float but it is not fluorescing. The signature's color under UV is dark brown and not purple. The signature has been tested by an outside conservator and is apparently old. There are a few small areas of paint loss along the egdes from frame abrasion. Lois signed and dated 'W.Wontner 1918' oil on canvas 25 x 21 in. (63.5 x 53.3 cm.) PROVENANCE with Richard Haworth, Blackburn, by 1926. Purchased by the present owner's father and thence by descent. NOTES Lois compares to Cyrene (lot 14) in concept and style, and may have been executed as a companion piece. Wontner has placed his model against a cool marble backdrop, a device which serves to enhance the rich colours of her costume. It also alludes to the classical world which remained, to both Wontner and his fellow painter John William Godward, the main locus of their inspiration. Whether inferred or direct, this aesthetic influence is present in Wontner's more imaginative work, though it is sometimes absent from his more orthodox portraits. Lois, like Cyrene, fuses together the modern and the classical world. The marble is doubly symbolic; it had been adopted by interior decorators establishing their own take on the Greek frigidarium. Similarly, Lois herself wears a snake bangle which alludes to ancient designs, and her delicate evening gown is secured at the shoulder like a toga. Her unadorned neck and simple hairstyle further ratify the greco-roman aesthetic, which emphasised elegant line rather than fussy decoration. John William Godward's comparable depictions of classical figures placed against marble surfaces often confine the head to a greater degree, as for example in Sabinella (1912) or A Classical Beauty (1909). For an enlightening account of both Godward and Wontner's aesthetic milieu, see Vern Swanson, John William Godward, The Eclipse of Classicism, 1997. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note that the provenance for this picture should read: with Richard Haworth, Blackburn, by 1926.

signed and dated W Wontner 1901 (lower left); also inscribed on a label attached to the backboard on the reverse: 'Then stole I up, and trancedly Gazed on the Persian girl alone, Serene with argent-lidded eyes Amorous, and lashes like rays Of darkness, and a brow of pearl Tressed with redolent ebony, In many a dark delicious curl, Flowing beneath her rose-hued zone; The sweetest lady of the time, Well worthy of the golden prime, Of good Haroun Alraschid.' oil on canvas 66 by 44in. 167.6 by 111.8cm. His audacious and unexpurgated version of the tales appeared in 1885-8. Wontner's The Persian Girl represents the genre of the Oriental female figure presented in an alluring way and within a calculatingly exotic setting. The figure is loosely dressed and holding an ivory-inlaid stringed instrument. She looks expectantly toward the spectator. She is perhaps intended as a denizen of the harem, and certainly the richly furnished chamber that sh
